April - June 2025

The second quarter of 2025 was largely dedicated to CREST’s emergency response efforts following the devastating earthquake in Myanmar. In the aftermath of the disaster, CREST deployed to Mandalay and surrounding affected areas to assess needs, support local partners, and witness firsthand the resilience of communities impacted by the catastrophe.

While the earthquake caused widespread destruction to infrastructure and livelihoods, the response also revealed the remarkable strength, compassion, and solidarity displayed by local communities and volunteers. CREST remained encouraged by the humanitarian spirit demonstrated throughout the recovery efforts.

In early April, CREST teams arrived in Mandalay as part of an emergency response mission following the major earthquake in Myanmar. Despite the significant destruction caused by the disaster, many communities had already begun rebuilding daily routines and restoring a sense of normalcy. Businesses gradually resumed operations, and volunteer-led relief efforts continued across affected areas.

The team later travelled to Sagaing, one of the areas most severely impacted by the earthquake. Damaged roads and disrupted infrastructure created logistical challenges for humanitarian operations, including delays in the delivery of food and relief supplies. CREST visited local Kachin Baptist Convention (KBC) clinics and accompanied mobile rescue and medical teams serving affected communities. The scale of recovery work being carried out by local responders and volunteers reflected the extraordinary determination of the people on the ground.

Throughout the mission, CREST observed the critical role played by local communities during the immediate aftermath of the earthquake. Before organised rescue agencies and international teams arrived, local residents and volunteers were the first to respond, rescuing neighbours trapped beneath collapsed structures and assisting affected families.

CREST acknowledged these unsung local heroes whose courage and compassion saved lives during the earliest and most critical moments of the disaster. The experience further reinforced the importance of strengthening local preparedness, rescue coordination, and community-based disaster response capabilities for future emergencies.

As CREST continued its humanitarian engagement during this period, preparations also began for the organisation’s upcoming fundraising dinner, an important milestone event held once every five years to support the continuation of its humanitarian and disaster response mission.
